Try-outs
Try-outs for Minor and Dixie Youth baseball will be announced later, and conducted
at Seven Oaks Park Fields #1 and #4. The rain-out make-up date for try-outs will
be announced later. You will be given a try-out time when you register.
The try-out consists of:
- Hitting - each player is given about half a dozen
swings at a pitching machine throwing about 45 mph.
- Fielding - each player is placed at shortstop and
fields several ground balls and throws to first base.
- Catching - each player is placed in left field and catches several
fly balls and throws to second base.
Try-out Tips - How To Do Your Best On Try-out Day
- Spend a week or two getting ready for try-outs. Don't
let try-out day be the first day you've picked up a baseball or swung a bat
since last season. Get Mom or Dad to take you to the batting cage for a couple
of BP sessions. Throw in the back yard with a brother or sister. Catch some
pop-flys. Field some ground balls. Be ready when try-out day comes!
- Get there early. Get comfortable with the
surroundings. Warm-up with a friend. Remember - everybody else is just as
nervous as you are!
- Hustle! Especially when running the bases. Many kids,
if they don't hit the ball solidly on their last swing, will give a
half-hearted jog down the first base line. Don't make that mistake.
- When fielding ground balls and catching fly balls,
make a good strong throw. A lot of kids make Major A's because they can catch
a fly ball and make a strong, accurate throw to second base.
- Dress for baseball. Coaches are not impressed by your
short pants and Michael Jordan basketball jersey. These are baseball try-outs.
Look like you're at baseball try-outs.
- Relax and enjoy. The truth of the matter is a lot of the Major A coaches
watched you play in minors last season and already have a pretty good idea
of what you can do on the baseball field.
The Draft
The Major coaches
will conduct their annual draft on Sunday following tryouts. In the event
of try-outs being rained-out on Saturday, the draft will be held after try-outs
on Sunday. Players can expect to hear from their coaches on Sunday night
or Monday. Practices will begin on Monday. For the players who try-out and are
not selected in the Major draft, you will hear from your Recreation League
coach in about a week.
