Baseball Players GifPreview of the 2003 Major A Season

Last updated March 13, 2003
This is a brief highlight of the upcoming season.  Some of the sponsors and several of the coaches have changed. Some sponsors changed division, although the teams remain in the same division.  Good luck to everyone.

PLAY HARD - PLAY FAIR - HAVE FUN

American League

REGIONS BANK - Twins  -  The team's head coach, Jim Clary had a fair season last year.  After losing several experiences 12-year olds, Coach Clary will be looking for some strong draft picks to go with his 5 returning players.  Regins picks third in this years draft.

STRAWBRIDGE - Blue Jays - Strawbridge finished 0-17 last year.  Coach Dean Quenneville will pick first in this year's draft.  The Coach will need to have a strong draft to contend with the rest of the teams in the division; however, he will have 5 experienced players returning.

Todd and Moore - Marlins - Head Coach Larry Carder did an excellent job with his team last year.  Coach Carder is moving up to the Dixie boys with his son.  The new coach, Tom Yeoman will have to have a great draft, with all the 12-yr olds moving up. Coach Yeoman will have 6 returning players.  He picks 6th in the draft..

LEGAL EAGLES - Braves   - Legal will also have a new coach this year, with coach Howe moving up with his son. He did an excellent job and finished with a strong record. The new coach, Curtis Dowling will have 5 returning players, including 1 all-star and will pick 5thin the draft.

National League

DUTCH FORK OPTIMIST - Athletics - Head Coach Frank Bacon, Coach Glenn King, Coach Doug Fisher, and Coach Randy Lee expect to improve last years record of 13-3-2.  DFO finished in a tie for first place last year. Coach Bacon will have 6 returning players, including two all-stars and he will pick 7th in the 2003 draft.

SRINT -  Giants   - JL Martin and the Giants had a great year in 2002.  Sprint has 6 returning players. With a 8-6-2 record last year, Coach Martin will pick 4th in the draft.

DOCTORS EYE CENTER - Rockies  - Another new coach, Travis Powell will pick up the Rockies this year.  Doctors Eye Care finished 1-12-1 last year and will have 5 returning players, including 1 all-star.  Coach Powell is moving up from the Minors and will have his Dad, Al Powell helping him. Al coached in the league several years ago, and brings a great deal of experience to the Rockies.  Travis played in the various Seven Oaks Park leagues, and moved on to pitch for Irmo High School.  It's good to see players return to help the kids in the area.

MIDLAND AIR - Marlins  - Due to the reduced number of players, the Marlins will be disbanded.  Returning players will be eligble to be drafted by other National Legue teams.

TRIPPS CLEANERS - Yankees   - Coach Chris Osborne and the Yankees won the league title after tying with DFO.  It took the second tie breaker for them to come out as the league champion.  Make no mistake, they will be strong again this year.  Coach Danny Edens will be returning to the league this year as an Assistant Coach for the Yankees. Coach Osborne will have 6 returning players, and will pick last in the draft. Look for Tripps, Sprint, Doctor's Eye Care and DFO to have a 4-way battle for the title this year.
